As part of the project, various types of soil mixtures obtained from biomass residues and post-production residues from ZG Janina, ZG Sobieski and power plants of the TAURON Group will be tested. In September, on the mining heap in Libiąż, the so-called a test site where reclamation work will be carried out using innovative ground cover methods that neutralize the acidity of the waste.

International research
The construction of a test site will allow testing in the field and in real conditions of various techniques for the recovery of areas degraded by mining activities. TAURON Wydobycie, together with the Central Mining Institute, will continuously monitor the environmental processes to control the applied solution and will carry out a comprehensive analysis of the water, soil and changes in the physical and chemical parameters of the substrate.
The evaluation of the effectiveness of the applied recovery methods will allow the development of optimal ecological and economic solutions for the revitalization of heaps and other degraded industrial areas.
The detailed scope of project work includes initiating the development of four types of plant communities, ie:
• xerothermic vegetation, ie, dry and thermophilic plant species,
• fresh habitat vegetation, ie, rough and grassland communities,
• bush vegetation with an anti-erosion function and wetland vegetation in places where rainwater accumulates.
At the end of the project, there will be a special workshop in Katowice on the development of the technology developed within the project with the participation of representatives of mining companies, policymakers and other stakeholders from all over Poland.

Innovative approach
As part of the RECOVERY project, an innovative model for the valuation of ecosystem services will also be developed, which will allow planning and establishing priorities aimed at the rehabilitation of objects created as a result of mining activities, says Dr. Ing . Alicja Krzemień, project manager at the Central Mining Institute. – We will also prepare tools to compare various options for landfill recovery and management based on implementation costs and valuation of ecosystem services, understood as the natural contribution of ecosystems to widely understood human well-being – he adds.
The acquired knowledge will allow developing appropriate methods to start plant communities in piles of mines and in areas degraded by industrial activity, restoring such wastelands to the environment with different ecological functions.
